Pulse Nightclub Survivors

Today, I am remembering the 49 people who lost their lives in a senseless act of violence one year ago at Pulse Nightclub. It is considered one of the deadliest mass shootings in modern U.S. history. Supporters, gathered around the nightclub to remember those we lost. One year later, survivors, and their family and friends still remember.

Demetrice Naulings, 35, lost his best friend, Eddie Justice, 30, when they attended Pulse Nightclub on June 12, 2016.

“I’m left with this as being guilty because I was with him that night, I was the last person that knew him and knew his family. To touch him, literally to hold his hand.”

Every survivor was interviewed and photographed to show how a mass shooting affects a community as a whole. You can see the entire article here.

The city of Orlando and Orange County Government designated June 12 as “Orlando United Day — A Day of Love and Kindness.”

This is a special thing for me because it allows me to become part of a culture that I, myself, have easily come to love very much. For starters, my wife is native to the Philippines. I have already learned so much from her in our time together. I remember the first time I started learning how to speak Tagalog. As I started learning the basics several years ago, she taught me a Filipino hand game called the nanay, tatay. Which translates to mother, father.

“Nanay, Tatay, gusto ko tinapay
Ate, Kuya, gusto ko kape,
Lahat ng gusto ko ay susundin niyo.
Sinong sasali sa larong ito?
Ang magkamali ay pipingutin ko…”

I enjoy immersing myself in another culture entirely, and without reservation. Especially when it comes to my wife. The Pinoy culture is now a part of who I am, an extension of myself. I’ve embraced it fully, from pointing with my lips to speaking fluent Tagalog, karaoke microphone in hand.

Mikey Bustos

Ever since YouTube exploded in 2005, this unique platform has become the de facto launchpad for the next generation of celebrities. There is some something out there for pretty much anyone these days from beauty to traveling vloggers. Whatever tickles your fancy, allow me to introduce you to one my favorite YouTubers, Mikey Bustos.

Mikey is a Canadian Filipino living in Manila known for his infamous Filipino tutorial video and parodies. He’s become an ambassador of the Filipino people everywhere.

The first video that I actually watched of Mikey was his Cheerleader (OMI) Filipino Parody that I caught on Facebook in 2015.

Well, recently I have had the opportunity to meet Mikey Bustos in Houston, TX. It was a great experience, and pretty surreal.

I traveled 6 hours to see him perform with Sheryn Regis, the Crystal Voice of Asia. I had butterflies in my stomach. I wondered what he was going to be like in person, or if I would even have the chance to say hello.

Watch out for shameless twitter timeline of that night:

Mikey engages with his fans on stage, as well as online. He is a talented singer, a humble person, and his honesty and perspective on the Filipino is very refreshing. If you are planning on traveling to the Philippines, and would like to learn a thing or two about the culture, Mikey Bustos is your Pinoyboy!

Rick and Morty: Season 3

April Fool’s day brought us many surprises, including Rick and Morty’s Season 3 episode. Thankfully, it wasn’t a prank. It had been a long wait, just over a year and a half. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the show, you can go here and get caught up! Rick and Morty follows aging scientific genius Rick, who moves in with his daughter’s family, subjecting them to his inventions and whims. When not working on a new project, Rick sweeps his grandson Morty on various misadventures. Since it debuted in 2013, the Adult Swim series has become a cult hit, and it’s hard not to be deeply invested in the show’s characters.

Adult Swim pulled what might have been the best April Fools’ Day prank in recent memory by dropping the season 3 premiere of Rick and Morty—for real. But don’t worry if you have missed the four-hour stream of “The Rickshank Rickdemption,” you won’t have to wait until the new season returns to catch it.

Adult Swim has announced Monday that “The Rickshank Rickdemption” will air every night this week at 10pm ET. While there’s still no word on when the rest of the season will drop aside from a vague statement that it’ll arrive “later this summer,” fans will have plenty of chances to see the season 3 premiere for the first time—or rewatch it.

You can check out more of Adult Swim’s Streams, including Rick and Morty here. Go watch it, it was worth the wait if you asked me. Now while you go do that, I’m gonna go take a shit.
